DynDNS: what is it?

It often happens that you need to access your PC from outside your home because you need a document, or you want to "send" to house a large file, but even if you have a broadband internet connection flat and your computer is always turned on you are faced with a problem: the ip of your connection is dynamic, and changes with each access or when deciding your network provider.
To overcome this problem on the Internet are born different services that allow you to map your dynamic ip to a domain and manage the changes that the network provider makes on your ip, the most popular of these services is precisely DynDNS .

First, a couple of explanations, to understand a little 'more about how the internet works and then how can we take advantage of its features with knowledge of the facts. But rest assured I will give only a few hints, without going into too much technical topics!
What is the ip address?
The IP address is that number (set of numbers) that allows you to uniquely identify a server, just like your home address.
Obviously, the language of computers is easy for them but obscure to us, so we hardly remember the IP address, but we will remember more easily the name of a domain eg www.alice.it
www.alice.it corresponds to 212.48.10.150, while the domain is extremely easy to remember, remember the ip is more difficult.
What is a DNS?
So we have these two pieces of information: the ip address and domain. Who puts in these two reports information? Simple DNS.
The DNS server that any program that wants to surf the Internet to query for work correctly:
We write www.alice.it in the browser, the browser queries the dns server that responds via this address 212.48.10.150 and navigate correctly towards the site of Virgil.
Simple, fast and convenient for us because everything is transparent.

The network adsl housewife normally has a dynamic ip, this association ip <-> domain can not be done via the dns normal, because they expect a fixed IP address that does not change over time.
That's because they were born like DynDNS services.

How does it work DynDNS?
He needs that our computer may commission him at regular intervals its ip assigned by the network provider. This communication takes place either via a small program provided by DynDNS or by their features of our home router.
The steps to follow are:
1) There enroll in and segliamo DynDNS domain name as miodominio.dyndns.org
2) Configure the client on our PC, or you insert data into the features of our router (solitamenet asks login, password, and domain name chosen)
3) Configure firewall and router (if you have one) so you can actually reach your PC!

And you're done!
Now you can access your PC, using the chosen service (ftp, http, etc. etc.) simply writing miodominio.dyndns.org!
-> WARNING <-
Once you have set all your computer is in the square :) and we all have access!
So I suggest you organize a good security system in order to curb the problems of hacking that could happen to you.
I would suggest:
1) The machine to which you have access to be "isolated" in the sense that we do not have to turn anything else that service (ftp, http, etc. etc.)
2) There must be a Windows machine :)
3) Always use complicated password
But most of all ...
Keep off the server when you do not need! :)

Oh yes, great suggestion! Keep off the server if you do not need :)

I've just registered a domain on dyndns and I must say that the service works wonders.
I just have FTP access and MYSQL externally (by dns and non-local).

For the rest everything to perfection, on a celeron with 128 MB of RAM (of course GNU / Debian!)

tell me how you are with this service, some users have found themselves hurt by configuring the router ... it seems that the update is not so 'fast and went to use the script on the pc ...

I set up a DDNS account x to remotely manage a DVR. I also set the virtual server: everything works, but I wonder:
the IP assigned by the router to the DVR, inserted into the virtual server, if it changes, it prevents the free DDNS account via the web?
or is it sufficient that account to access x?
    Thanks!
